The American fascination with what would come to be known as tiki culture begins more than 100 years ago. “Its origins go back to the 19th century when Americans became quite interested in the South Pacific. One of the earliest and best-known tiki bars was named “Don the Beachcomber“, and was created in Los Angeles in 1933 by Ernest Gantt (aka “Donn Beach”). The bar served a wide variety of exotic rum drinks (including the popular “Sumatra Kula” and “Zombie cocktail“) as well as Cantonese food, and displayed many artifacts that Gantt had collected on earlier trips through the tropics. So, what does one need to make a great Tiki Bar? In addition to fantastic cocktails, a transportive space filled with quality arts and crafts that compels you to leave your troubles at the door. It should be a windowless environment that feels both exciting and comforting at the same time. Check out this list of the six great local tiki bar’s that Sarasota has to offer.
